Environment & Sustainability

We worked hard on the renovation of Castleview Cottage to ensure that the choices we made were good choices for the environment, using natural and locally sourced products where possible.

We have installed extra insulation and a super efficient combi-boiler for heating and hot water, together with A class energy efficient appliances throughout.  We do not have a dishwasher or microwave as we feel this is an unnecessary burden on the environment and we are proud to be members of Plastic Free Conwy, a community group working to reduce the amount of single use plastics in our environment.  You will find ecological cleaning products, including ocean saver (refillable concentrates) and method.  We save many dozens of plastic bottles every year by using solid soap.

Our electricity is supplied on green tariff electricity - 100% from wind farms and the open fire provides a wonderful warm and cosy environment for our guests and we encourage the use of super-efficient long burning eco-logs manufactured from waste wood. Most supermarkets and DIY outlets stock these easy to light and low emission logs.

We have also installed a water saving half flush toilet,, low energy LED lighting ,and use pillows and duvets manufactured from recycled plastic bottles.

In addition to our ecological cleaning products, we use fair trade tea and coffee, re-fillable water bottles and a supply of shopping bags (Wales is proudly working towards a plastic bag free future and if you do ask for a bag when shopping you are charged 5p).

All our guests are required to recycle - there is a bin for recycling paper, cardboard, aluminium tins/cans and glass bottles.

We encourage you to enjoy and take advantage of the many opportunities to interact with the numerous birds and wildlife in and around the area, including the renowned Conwy RSPB center and the Pensychnant Conservation Center, both just a mile or so away.  The shared outside space adjacent to the cottage is deliberately left uncultivated for the benefit of local wildlife - you will spot plenty of garden birds, butterflies and bees.

We encourage visitors to make use of the excellent local public transport facilities which are extremely convenient and we have plenty of information on the most sustainable travel options.

We are active members of both Surfer's Against Sewerage and National Trust and in appreciation we offer generous discounts for volunteers of these organisations staying with us.
